Product Information
Xigris (Drotrecogin Alpha) is the only FDA-approved treatment proven to lower the risk of death from severe sepsis in adult patients at a high risk of death. Doctors use antibiotics to treat the infection that triggers severe sepsis, but Xigris (Drotrecogin Alpha) is the only medication that actually treats severe sepsis itself.Doctors carefully evaluate a patient before deciding to give Xigris (Drotrecogin Alpha). When a doctor determines that a patient with severe sepsis is at a high risk of dying, he or she may decide to use Xigris (Drotrecogin Alpha) to help the patient survive. Xigris (Drotrecogin Alpha) is given through an IV tube continuously for four days.
Xigris (Drotrecogin Alpha) is not for everyone. Xigris (Drotrecogin Alpha) acts as a "blood thinner," so it increases the chance of bleeding, especially in patients who have conditions that may make them more likely to bleed. These include certain medical conditions, medications, and procedures related to the patient's history or care. Some of these patients should not receive Xigris (Drotrecogin Alpha). Doctors will evaluate each patient carefully and make a decision based on specific knowledge of the patient and the potential benefits and risks of Xigris (Drotrecogin Alpha) treatment. No other side effects are associated with Xigris (Drotrecogin Alpha).
