Product Information
Voltaren Ophthalmic is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug for treatment of postoperative inflammation in patients who have undergone cataract extraction and for the temporary relief of pain and photophobia in patients undergoing corneal refractive surgery. Diclofenac sodium, the principal active ingredient of Voltaren Ophthalmic, is a phenylacetic acid that has analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. It is believed to act through the reversible inhibition of the cyclo-oxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2 that are essential in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins. For cataract surgery: the patient should administer 1 drop of Voltaren Ophthalmic to the affected eye 4 times daily beginning 24 hours after cataract surgery and continuing throughout the first 2 weeks after surgery. For corneal refractive surgery: the patient should apply 1 or 2 drops to the eye that will be surgically treated within the hour before surgery. Within 15 minutes after surgery, 1 to 2 drops of Voltaren Ophthalmic should be instilled into the eye. Administration should be continued 4 times daily for up to 3 days.
