Product Information

Xatral (Alfuzosin) belongs to a group of medications known as alpha 1A receptor antagonists. Xatral (Alfuzosin) is used to treat the symptoms of enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). Xatral (Alfuzosin) helps to relax the muscles in the prostate and the opening of the bladder. This helps to improve urine flow and decrease symptoms of BPH. Xatral (Alfuzosin) does not slow or stop the progression of enlarged prostate. Your doctor may have suggested Xatral (Alfuzosin) for other conditions. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking Xatral (Alfuzosin), speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking Xatral (Alfuzosin) without consulting your doctor. The usual recommended Xatral (Alfuzosin) dose is one 10 mg tablet daily, after a meal. The Xatral (Alfuzosin) tablet should swallowed whole, not chewed or crushed. Xatral (Alfuzosin) should be taken after the same meal each day. Many things can affect the Xatral (Alfuzosin) dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor. It is very important that Xatral (Alfuzosin) be used on a regular schedule as prescribed by the doctor. If you miss a dose of Xatral (Alfuzosin), check with your health care professional. Do not double-up on doses. Xatral (Alfuzosin) should not be used by people who:

-are allergic to alfuzosin or any ingredients of the medication

-have moderate to severe impairment of liver function

The side effects of Xatral are not experienced by everyone who takes this medication. If you are concerned about Xatral side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor. Your health professional may be able to help you deal with some of the Xatral (Alfuzosin) side effects.

Angina: People with angina (chest pain) should stop using Xatral (Alfuzosin) if their symptoms reappear or become worse.

Orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure upon arising): Xatral (Alfuzosin) can cause orthostatic hypotension, leading to dizziness or fainting when rising from a sitting or lying position. If you feel faint or dizzy when getting up, lie down until the symptoms pass. This effect often goes away as treatment with Xatral (Alfuzosin) is continued. People with orthostatic hypotension should use cautioun while taking Xatral (Alfuzosin), as it may worsen their condition.

Prostate cancer: Prostate cancer and BPH cause many of the same symptoms. These two diseases frequently coexist. Before starting Xatral (Alfuzosin) therapy, an evaluation should take place to rule out prostate cancer.

Women: Xatral (Alfuzosin) is not recommended for use by women.

Children: Xatral (Alfuzosin) is not recommended for use by children.

The following medications may affect how Xatral (Alfuzosin)works or increase the risk of side effects:

-diltiazem

-ketoconazole

-medications used to lower blood pressure

-other alpha 1 blockers (e.g., tamsulosin, doxazosin, terazosin)

If you are taking any of these medications, speak with your doctor. An interaction between two medications does not always mean that you must stop taking one of them. In many cases, interactions are intended or are managed by close monitoring. Speak to your doctor about how any drug interactions are being managed or should be managed.
