Product Information
TOPROL-XL is a specially designed extended-release tablet that belongs to a family of medications known as beta-blockers. Beta-blockers help to reduce how hard the heart has to work. Once you swallow TOPROL-XL, the coating of the tablet dissolves away to release hundreds of microcapsules filled with medication. These microcapsules slowly disintegrate, releasing medicine into your body where they work for 24 hours. TOPROL-XL (metoprolol succinate) is used to treat high blood pressure, angina over the long term, and heart failure. In heart failure, TOPROL-XL is used to treat stable, symptomatic patients with Class II or III heart failure that is caused by high blood pressure, blocked heart arteries, or other heart muscle disorders. You do not have to avoid any food or drink when taking TOPROL-XL. However, your doctor will discuss how you can improve your diet and talk to you about any foods or drinks that you should avoid based on your health condition. Some medicines used for heart disease, depression, and other conditions have been shown to affect the way TOPROL-XL works. TOPROL-XL may also affect the way other medicines work. If you are taking a calcium channel blocker or have asthma, diabetes, overactive thyroid disease, or peripheral vascular disease, or are planning to have any type of surgery soon, you may not be able to take TOPROL-XL. Talk to your doctor or other health care provider about your health history. Be sure to tell your doctor, dentist, and other health care providers about TOPROL-XL as well as any other medicines you are taking. Toprol XL side effects leading to discontinuation of TOPROL-XL included tiredness and dizziness/vertigo. These side effects occurred in 1% to 2% of patients. Many people with heart failure, high blood pressure, and angina can take once-a-day TOPROL-XL. However, TOPROL-XL should not be taken by people with certain types of heart problems, such as extreme slowing of the heart rate, uncontrolled heart failure, heart block greater than first degree, and sick sinus syndrome (unless a permanent pacemaker is in place). Only your doctor can determine if TOPROL-XL is right for you. If you are taking a calcium channel blocker or have asthma, diabetes, overactive thyroid disease, or peripheral vascular disease, or are planning to have any type of surgery soon, you may not be able to take TOPROL-XL. Talk to your doctor or health care provider about your health history, and be sure to tell your doctor, dentist, and other health care providers that you are taking TOPROL-XL as well as about any other medicines you are taking.
