Effects - How it works in the body
Prepulsid belongs to the group of cholinergic enhancer and Gastrointestinal emptying (delayed) adjunct drug, commonly used for the treatment and relieves of the symptoms of nighttime heartburn due to reflux disease. Prepulsid works by stimulating the body's release of acetylcholine, which increases rhythmic contractions and digestive activity of the lower esophagus, stomach, and intestines. Prepulsid encourages release of a chemical known as acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter from numerous places (myenteric plexi) along the gut wall. This leads to increased forward motion throughout the length of the gut. Prepulsid is used against gastro-oesophageal reflux. In this condition food from the stomach moves back up into the oesophagus (gullet). The acid in the stomach causes damage to the oesophagus. By emptying the stomach faster, the drug stops food and acid moving back in to the gullet and prevents further damage to the gullet, reducing pain.
