Plavix

Plavix, a Drug consisting of Clopidogrel Hydrogen Sulphate compound, and comes in the category of drugs called Antiplatelet medicines. Plavix is used for the prevention of blood clots in the blood. Plavix/Clopidogrel is manufactured jointly by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi Pharmaceuticals.

What are the major disorders for which Plavix/Clopidogrel may be Used?

The major role of Plavix/Clopidogrel is to help the body so that no blood clots are formed. As blood clot is one of the most common reason of heart attack, heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases, hence, Plavix helps in the prevention of these blood clots. Plavix is used for the treatment of following problems:

  • Reduction of further heart attacks: If a person had a heart attack in the past, which may have occurred due to the presence of blood clots in the blood, it becomes necessary that these blood clots are reduced. If the blood continues to form the clots, it may lead to further heart attacks, which is life threatening, and may lead to death.
  • Reduction of further strokes: High blood pressure and high cholesterol could be the reasons for having a stroke or other heart problems, but they are generally supported by blood clots in the blood, which deteriorates the condition. Due to all these problems the person is unable to breath properly, feels shortness of breath, and these become very serious problems if not treated well in time.

A blood clot that forms inside the blood vessels is known as a thrombosis and can be dangerous, as it can cause a blockage that cuts off the blood supply to an organ. A blockage in the arteries supplying blood to the heart or brain can cause a heart attack or stroke. Blood clots and blockages mainly result from a build up of atherosclerosis on the inside of blood vessels, which is the build up of cholesterol and fat cells that narrows the blood vessels. This makes it more difficult for blood to flow through the vessels, and increases the likelihood of clots forming in the vessels. These events are known as atherothrombotic events.

Plavix works well in all the problems related to heart, where the heart stops working properly. It is then required that causes of these problems be rooted out, one amongst which is the blood clots. Plavix as an antiplatelet medicine helps in the reduction of these clots.

How Plavix works?

Plavix consists of a compound called clopidogrel that comes in the category of antiplatelet medicines. The function of these antiplatelet medicines, including Plavix is to help in thinning of blood. Plavix works by putting and end to the clubbing of platelets, which are blood cells. Also, Plavix prevents the bonding of a natural substance called ADP to its receptors on platelets.

The main cause of this clotting is the chemical called ADP, and Plavix stops this chemical from binding to platelets. Thus, it helps in the reduction of the formation of clots in the blood.. Clopidogrel is used to prevent blood clots forming within blood vessels, and therefore reduce the risk of further atherothrombotic events in these groups of people.

Hence, Plavix/Clopidogrel helps in further heart attacks and heart strokes by reducing the amount of blood clots.
