Coumadin
Coumadin is prescribed to treat blood clots, including those associated with atrial fibrillation, heart valve replacement or clots that might become lodged in the lungs. Coumadin is also used to prevent recurring heart attacks, stroke, and other clots that may occur after a heart attack. Coumadin works by partially blocking the re-use of Vitamin K in the liver. Vitamin K is used to assist the blood in clotting.Coumadin is considered to be a narrow therapeutic index pharmaceutical. This means that there is a very small margin between too much and too little medication. When too much Coumadin is taken, it may cause the patient to bleed excessively, and when too little is prescribed it may allow a harmful clot to form.
