Rimadyl (Carprofen) is a 24-hour, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is administered once a day. Rimadyl (Carprofen) provides safe and effective relief of pain and inflammation due to canine arthritis, orthopedic and soft tissue surgery.
Rimadyl Side Effects:
Rimadyl (Carprofen) decreases inflammation and may protect the articular cartilage. Since Rimadyl (Carprofen) is metabolized by the liver, Rimadyl (Carprofen) should only be prescribed after bloodwork has determined that this is a suitable therapy. Rimadyl side effects are rare but can include loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea have been observed with rimadyl, but this drug remains the most effective pain reliever.
Rimadyl (Carprofen) is canine NSAID in oral dosage form and Rimadyl (Carprofen) selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 which generates prostaglandins involved in inflammation.
Once-daily dosage of Rimadyl (Carprofen) provides anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects for 24 hours.
Rimadyl Chewable tablets and Rimadyl Caplets are approved for:
Pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in dogs.
Control of postoperative pain associated with soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries in dogs.
Rimadyl (Carprofen) Precautions:
The usual dose of Rimadyl in dogs is 1mg/pound twice a day. Rimadyl (Carprofen) should not be used in dogs exhibiting previous hypersensitivity to carprofen. As a class, COX-inhibitory NSAIDs may be associated with gastrointestinal and renal toxicity. When NSAIDs inhibit prostaglandins that cause inflammation, they may also inhibit prostaglandins which maintain normal homeostatic function. The most frequently reported effects have been gastrointestinal signs. Rimadyl (Carprofen), like other drugs of its class, is not free from adverse reactions. Pet owners should be advised of the potential for adverse reactions and be informed of the clinical signs associated with drug intolerance. Serious adverse reactions associated with this drug class – including but not limited to gastrointestinal, renal and hepatic signs – can occur without warning and in rare situations result in death. Owners should be advised to discontinue Rimadyl (Carprofen) therapy and contact their veterinarian immediately if signs of intolerance are observed. The use of parenteral fluids during surgery should be considered to reduce the potential risk of renal complications when using NSAIDs perioperatively. Concurrent use of RIMADYL with other anti-inflammatory drugs, such as corticosteroids and NSAIDs, should be avoided or very closely monitored.
Please keep Rimadyl (Carprofen) out of reach of children. Rimadyl (Carprofen) is NOT FOR HUMAN USE.
RIMADYL IS FOR USE IN DOGS ONLY.
