In heart failure, TOPROL-XL is used to treat stable, symptomatic patients with Class II or III heart failure that is caused by high blood pressure, blocked heart arteries, or other heart muscle disorders. You do not have to avoid any food or drink when taking TOPROL-XL. Toprol XL side effects leading to discontinuation of TOPROL-XL included tiredness and dizziness/vertigo. These side effects occurred in 1% to 2% of patients. Many people with heart failure, high blood pressure, and angina can take once-a-day TOPROL-XL. However, TOPROL-XL should not be taken by people with certain types of heart problems, such as extreme slowing of the heart rate, uncontrolled heart failure, heart block greater than first degree, and sick sinus syndrome (unless a permanent pacemaker is in place).
