Ecostatin works by preventing fungus from growing. It works by inhibiting the production of a chemical called ergosterol, which is a component of the fungal cell membrane. Damage to this membrane cannot be repaired and this interferes with the fungal cell's ability to reproduce, hence the infection is controlled. Ecostatin is used in the treatment of fungal infections of the skin such as ringworm or tinea, athlete's foot and fungal nappy rash and fungal infections of the genital area. Ecostatin also has some activity against certain strains of bacterial infections.
