Effects - How it works in the body
Valcyte belongs to the family of drugs called systemic Antiviral medications and commonly used for the treatment and prevention of the viral infections, including cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis, and to prevent viral infections in patients with compromised immune systems. Valcyte works by slowing the growth and reproduction of the virus. CMV is a member of the herpes group of viruses. In healthy people this common virus normally produces symptoms milder than the common cold, but in people whose immune systems are compromised, such as those with AIDS, it can cause serious infection because the immune system cannot fight it. In people with AIDS, infection with CMV can lead to complications known as CMV retinitis. In CMV retinitis the virus causes severe inflammatory changes in the retina of the eye or blindness. Valcyte works by blocking the action of an enzyme called DNA polymerase that is found in the CMV virus. This enzyme is required by the virus for it to copy genetic material, a process that is necessary for the virus to multiply and survive. This controls the infection and helps the immune system to relief of it.
