Crestor (Rosuvastatin) from Canada, blocks the production of cholesterol (a type of fat) in the body. Crestor (Rosuvastatin) is used to reduce the amounts of LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides (another type of fat), and apolipoprotein B (a protein needed to make cholesterol) in the blood. Crestor also increases the level of HDL (good) cholesterol in the blood. These actions are important in reducing the risk of atherosclerosis (fatty deposits in the arteries), which can lead to heart attack, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Crestor (Rosuvastatin) may also be used for purposes other than those listed above. Before taking Crestor, tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, have hypothyroidism (low thyroid function), drink alcoholic beverages, have a chronic muscular disease, require major surgery; or have a blood disorder. Do not take Crestor without first talking to your doctor if you have liver disease. Crestor is known to cause birth defects in an unborn baby when taken during pregnancy. Do not take Crestor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. Crestor is usually taken once a day. Try to take each dose at the same time daily. Follow your doctor's instructions. It is important to take Crestor regularly to get the most benefit. Do not stop taking Crestor without first talking to your doctor. It may be weeks or months before beneficial effects are seen from this medication. To realize beneficial effects from Crestor, avoid fatty, high-cholesterol foods. Eat a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. Store Crestor at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of Crestor. Alcohol and Crestor can both be damaging to the liver. Discuss with your doctor the amount of alcohol that you drink so that it can be determined if Crestor is the best choice for lowering your cholesterol. Do not take Crestor with antacids that contain aluminum and magnesium such as Maalox, Mylanta, Gelusil and others. If an antacid that contains aluminum and magnesium is needed, it should be taken at least 2 hours following a dose of Crestor. Side effects of Crestor: Rare cases of muscle problems and liver problems have been associated with the use of Crestor and other similar medicines. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if accompanied by a fever or flulike symptoms or yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, unexplained fatigue, dark colored urine or pale colored stools. These may be early symptoms of muscle or liver problems. If you experience a rare but serious allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives) stop taking Crestor and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately. Other, less serious side effects of Crestor may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Crestor and talk to your doctor if you experience headaches, diarrhea or constipation and nausea or upset stomach. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effects of Crestor that seem unusual or that is especially bothersome. Before taking Crestor, talk to your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines: cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral); clofibrate (Atromid-S); fenofibrate (Tricor); gemfibrozil (Lopid); niacin (Nicolar, Nicobid, Nicotinex, others); or warfarin (Coumadin). Crestor is a drug consisting of a compound called Rosuvastatin Calcium. Crestor/Rosuvastatin belongs to a category of drugs called statins, which are used to reduce the content of cholesterol in the blood. Crestor is being manufactured by AstraZeneca.
What are the most common problems for which the Crestor/Rosuvastatin is used?
The most important function of Crestor/Rosuvastatin is to block the production of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is a substance similar to wax present in the blood and produced by liver, which blocks the normal flow of blood from heart to other body parts. And it is of two kinds: LDL and HDL.
LDL is called as the bad cholesterol and HDL as the good cholesterol. The amount of LDL cholesterol in the body should be on the lower side, because it is bad if its amount is high in the blood. In contrast, HDL cholesterol should be on the higher side, as it good for the blood and the normal functioning of the body.
Besides stopping the production of cholesterol in blood, Crestor/Rosuvastatin also helps in reducing the amount of LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol. An increase in the amount of cholesterol leads to heart problems, which may be life threatening.
But due to the availability of medicines like Crestor/Rosuvastatin that come in the category of statins, it becomes easy to lower the cholesterol amount in blood. Thus, Crestor/Rosuvastatin helps in the prevention of heart attacks and other heart problems.
Crestor/Rosuvastatin alone cannot work properly, it should be supplemented with restricted diet patterns, and one should take diet that contains less of cholesterol.
How Crestor/pravastatin works?Crestor/Rosuvastatin belongs to the category of drugs called Statins. The basic function of cholesterol lowering medicines is to inhibit an enzyme in the liver, which is necessary for the production of cholesterol.
Crestor/Rosuvastatin and other such drugs helps in lowering total and LDL ("bad") cholesterol as well as triglycerides. They also increase HDL ("good") cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is believed to be an important cause of coronary artery disease. By doing the above Crestor/Rosuvastatin decreases the risk of heart attacks and many times may even reverse coronary artery disease.
Some other major drugs in category of statins, used to lower cholesterol are Zocor, Pravachol, Lipitor, Lescol, Mevacor and Altocor.
Is any prescription required to get Crestor/Pravastatin?
Crestor/Rosuvastatin is generally recommended once a day and Crestor may be taken with or without food, and Crestor should be swallowed with water. The person taking Crestor should also take diet that is low in fat and cholesterol. One can ask a doctor for the exact dosage of Crestor.
What is the minimum duration for which Crestor should be taken?
There is no time duration specified for the intake of Crestor/Rosuvastatin. However, the intake of Crestor should not be stopped even after the cholesterol level has decreased. A doctor can best describe the time period for which Crestor/Rosuvastatin should be taken.
Are there any side effects of Crestor?
