Prilosec Side Effects

Prilosec can cause side effects. Some of these side effects are minor and usually do not require you to stop taking the medicine. Others may be more serious. The most common side effects that occur while taking Prilosec are headache, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Other side effects that occur less often include dizziness, constipation, back pain, skin rash, feeling of weakness, cough, and cold symptoms. There are other side effects that have been reported during treatment with Prilosec. These side effects are less common, but some could be serious or even fatal. Discuss with your health care professional the risks versus the benefits of this treatment. Call your health care professional immediately:

  • if your GERD symptoms worsen during treatment or do not go away by the end of your treatment.
  • if you notice any itching, skin rash, fever, swelling of the face, or difficulty breathing while taking Prilosec. These may be signs that you are allergic to the medicine and you may need emergency medical help.
  • if you notice any side effects or any other symptoms that you are concerned about. if you have any questions or concerns about your treatment.
  • If you think that you have taken more than the prescribed dose of this medicine, call your health care professional, local Poison Control Center, or get emergency medical care immediately.
