Plavix Precautions

Your doctor may prescribe Plavix and aspirin if you have been hospitalized with heart-related chest pain (unstable angina) or had a certain type of heart attack - conditions doctors call acute coronary syndrome (ACS). For these patients, taking Plavix and aspirin together offers even more protection against a future heart attack or stroke than aspirin alone. Plavix, taken with aspirin, plays its own role in keeping blood platelets from sticking together.

Though you may be taking medications to help reduce your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, your doctor may also prescribe Plavix. Although blood pressure and cholesterol medications help reduce your overall cardiovascular risk, they do not directly reduce clot formation - the cause of most heart attacks and strokes. Prescription Plavix does.

Review any medications you are taking, including aspirin, with your doctor, and always check with your doctor before stopping or starting any prescription or over-the-counter medication, or any herbal or dietary supplements.

If you have a medical condition that causes bleeding, such as stomach ulcer, you shouldn't use Plavix. The risk of bleeding may increase with Plavix, and when you take Plavix with certain other medicines, including aspirin. Review your medicines with your doctor to minimize this risk. Additional rare, but serious, side effects could occur.
