Accolate is a drug consisting of Zafirlukast, where Zafirlukast is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist. Accolate is used for the treatment of Asthma, and Accolate comes in 20mg tablets. Accolate/Zafirlukast is being manufactured by AstraZeneca.
What are the major disorders for which Accolate/Zafirlukast may be Used?
Just like other drugs meant for the treatment of Asthma, Accolate/Zafirlukast is also a drug for the prevention of Asthma. Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory lung disease characterized by recurrent breathing problems. People with asthma have acute episodes or when the air passages in their lungs get narrower, and breathing becomes more difficult in asthma. Sometimes episodes of asthma are triggered by allergens, although infection, exercise, cold air and other factors are also important triggers.
Asthma is a disease of the respiratory system. During an asthma attack, the muscles around the airways tighten, or "spasm" (like when you make a fist) and the lining inside the airways swell or thicken, and get clogged with lots of thick mucous. This makes the airways much skinnier than usual so it is harder to move air in and out of the air sacs. Accolate/Zafirlukast helps the patients in a way that it provides relief once the attack has occurred.
Accolate/Zafirlukast may also be used for the treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis. It is usually called "hay fever", and is caused by an allergy to the pollen of trees, grasses, weeds or mold spores. Seasonal allergic rhinitis may occur in the spring, summer or fall and may last until the first frost. The "season" depends on which allergen causes the reaction, the region of the country and pollination periods. Symptoms include sneezing, itching and watery eyes, runny nose, burning palate and throat. These seasonal allergies have been known to trigger asthma. Singulair is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children 6 years of age and older.
Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and asthma are both known as allergic conditions, and are interrelated. Both can be triggered by many of the same allergens. And, in both conditions, increased amounts of leukotrienes play an important role in causing symptoms—in the nose in allergic rhinitis and in your lungs in asthma.
Due to this interrelation of these two problems, Accolate/Zafirlukast has been found to be very successful in patients suffering from these problems.
Accolate is very commonly used for the treatment of asthma and for relieving the symptoms of allergic rhinitis.
Accolate/Zafirlukast is an oral leukotriene receptor antagonist used for treating asthma. Leukotrienes are a group of chemicals manufactured in the body from arachidonic acid. Release of leukotrienes within the body, for example, by allergic reactions, promotes inflammation in many diseases such as asthma, a disease in which inflammation occurs in the lungs. Zafirlukast blocks the binding of leukotriene types D4 (LTD4), and E4 (LTE4).
The Active ingredient present in Accolate is Zafirlukast, which is a selective and competitive receptor antagonist of leukotriene D4 and E4, components of slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRSA). The production of Cysteinyl leukotriene and receptor occupation are correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma, including airway edema, smooth muscle constriction, and altered cellular activity associated with the inflammatory process, which contribute to the signs and symptoms of asthma.
Accolate/Zafirlukast works well in the treatment of asthma, but Accolate starts working only after 3 to 14 days of therapy. Therefore, it is advisable that Accolate should not be used for treating an acute asthmatic attack in which prompt effectiveness is needed.
