Evista (raloxifene HCl) is a prescription medication that prevents and treats osteoporosis in women past menopause. Evista is neither an estrogen nor a hormone. Evista is a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator, or SERM. It helps build bone without negatively affecting the breast or uterus. Evista prevents and treats osteoporosis by actually helping make your bones stronger and less likely to break.

Evista has been shown to decrease the risk of fractures of the spine. While preventing and treating osteoporosis in women who are past menopause, Additional effects of Evista are:

  • Lowers cholesterol. Evista lowers total cholesterol by about 7% and LDL (bad) cholesterol by about 11%. It does not change HDL (good) cholesterol. The effect of Evista on risk for cardiovascular events is currently under study.
  • Does not increase the risk of breast or uterine cancer. Women taking Evista had no increased risk of breast or uterine cancer in clinical studies. It has not been established if Evista is able to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
  • Does not cause breast tenderness or vaginal bleeding. Women taking Evista and women taking placebo (sugar pill) experienced no difference in breast tenderness or vaginal bleeding in clinical studies.
