Celexa Information
Celexa is an antidepressant from the family of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Celexa helps to restore the brain's chemical balance by increasing the supply of a chemican messenger in the brain called serotonin. Celexa apprears to relieve depression by increasing serotonin with minimal effect on many of the other chemicals on the brain, and the relatively few and mild side effects will tend to go away with continued treatment.
| SSRIs work by attempting to correct chemical imbalances in the brain. There is a growing amount of evidence that suggests that people with depression have an inbalance of the brain's neurotransmitters. SSRIs affect how much serotonin is available by blocking its reabsorption during hte transmission from one nerve cell in the brain to another. Serotonin is released from one nerver cell and passed to the next. In the process, some of the serotonin is reabsorbed by the first nerve cell. SSRIs operate by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin into the first nerve cell. It is this blocking action that causes an increased amount of serotonin to become available in the next nerve cell. |
