Actonel (risedronate) is indicated for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in women who are past menopause. Actonel is also used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in men and women taking high doses of crticosteroids, and to treat a condition called Paget's disease. Actonel (risedronate) increases the density of bone by slowing down the cells that usually break down bone. This allows the cells that build bone to work more efficiently. By making bones stronger, Actonel can help to reduce the incidence of broken bones. Actonel is also used for the treatment of Paget's disease in patients who have a level of serum alkaline phosphatase at least 2 times the upper limit of normal, who are symptomatic, or who are at risk for future complications from their disease.
Risedronate
Risedronate is a pyridinyl bisphosphonate that inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and modulates bone metabolism. Each Actonel tablet for oral administration contains the equivalent of 5 or 30 mg of anhydrous risedronate sodium in the form of the hemi-pentahydrate with small amounts of monohydrate. Risedronate sodium is a fine, white to off-white odorless, crystalline powder. It is soluble in water and in aqueous solutions, and essentiall insoluble in common organic solvents. Inactive ingredients added to risedronate in Actonel are Crospovidone, ferric oxide yellow (5 mg tablets only), hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide.
