Product Information

Exjade (Deferasirox) is a once-daily oral chelator for the treatment of chronic iron overload due to blood transfusions. Exjade (Deferasirox) is formulated as tablets for dispersion to formulated as tablets drink in order to allow convenient administration to both adult and pediatric patients.

Exjade (Deferasirox) is taken once daily. To take Exjade (Deferasirox), disperse the Exjade (Deferasirox) tablets in a glass of water, orange juice or apple juice.

Iron overload is a potentially life-threatening condition that results from frequent blood transfusions required to treat certain types of anemias and other disorders, including thalassemia, sickle cell disease, other rare anemias and myelodysplastic syndromes. If left undiagnosed or untreated, iron overload can lead to damage to the liver, heart and endocrine glands, and can be fatal. Transfused patients are often treated for iron overload with a type of drug therapy called iron chelation, which removes excess iron from the body.

The most frequently reported adverse events associated with Exjade (Deferasirox) were transient in nature and included mild to moderate nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, skin rash, and dose-dependent increases in serum creatinine. As with deferoxamine injection (Desferal, made by Novartis), Exjade (Deferasirox) was associated with a low incidence of ocular and auditory disturbances.

Kidney and liver function should be monitored, and hearing and vision tested prior to and during treatment with Exjade (Deferasirox).
