Elidel is absorbed into the skin, where it works by blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals known as cytokines. These are produced by white blood cells in the skin as part of the body's immune response to allergy or irritation, and are part of a cascade of events in the skin that results in the irritated area becoming inflamed - red, swollen and itchy. The inflammation is caused by activation of the immune system though the reason for the activation is unknown. Elidel Cream suppresses the immune system and the inflammation by inhibiting an enzyme (calcineurin) crucial for the multiplication of T-cells, cells that are required for activation of the immune system. The exact working mechanism of Elidel Cream is not fully understood.
