Like all ARB/diuretic fixed-dose combinations, Benicar HCT is not indicated for initial therapy. The other component is in a class called thiazide diuretics (HCTZ) and works by increasing water excretion from the body. The two classes of drugs have a complementary effect in reducing blood pressure.Benicar and Benicar HCT, like all members of the ARB class, are not recommended for pregnant women. Benicar should be taken as directed by your healthcare provider. Benicar may be taken with or without food. Generally, this chemical produces another chemical, angiotensin II. Therefore Benicar HCT Tablets reduces the amount of angiotensin II in the blood. Angiotensin II has two actions. Firstly it acts on blood vessels to make them narrow and secondly it acts on the kidney to produce less urine. As Benicar HCT Tablets stops the production of angiotensin II, these actions are reversed. Thus more urine is produced by the kidney, which results in less fluid in the blood vessels. The overall effect of Benicar HCT Tablets is a drop in blood pressure and a decrease in the workload of the heart.
