How Alesse (Ethinyl Estradiol/ Levonorgestrel) works?

Alesse work to prevent unwanted pregnancies by changing the way a female's reproductive system works, specifically how she ovulates. A gland in the brain, called the pituitary, releases hormones during a woman's monthly cycle. Every 28 days or so these hormones signal the ovaries to start preparing an ovum. Hormones also prepare the uterus or womb to receive the egg. Ovulation is a normal function of a woman's menstrual cycle. Most women have a menstrual cycle that lasts about days. Ovulation occurs around the 14th day of that cycle. When a woman ovulates one or more eggs are produced from one of her ovaries. The egg is passed from the ovary to the fallopian tube, where a man's sperm can fertilize it during unprotected sex.

Alesse work primarily by thickening cervical mucus, Alesse may also stop the release of the egg from the ovary or hinder the fertilized egg's ability to implant in the uterus. Progestin only pills are more effective at suppressing ovulation in women who are lactating/breast-feeding.
